Minioster Maithripala Sirisena has called on the people to contribute to rein in tuberculosis making optimum use of the free facilities granted by the Government.
The Minister made this call while launching the Second Unit under the programme of establishing Direct Treatment Units on tuberculosis at Private Hospitals. The Second Unit was opened at Hemas Private Hospital in Wattala. About 11 thousand TB patients are being reported annually. The highest number of cases is reported from the Colombo District in the Western Province. High population growth and environmental pollution are some of the factors which contribute to spread of the disease. The main purpose of establishing these Direct Treatment Units is to solicit the contribution of the Private Sector to minimize the spread of the disease. The WHO Sri Lanka Representative Dr. Firdosi Rustom, Health Secretary Dr. Ravindra Ruberu and Chairman of the Hemas Hospital Group Yusuf Mortaza were among those present.
