Breezy, dry conditions helped promote some brush fires in the Midlands and even more serious blazes on the coast, where some property was destroyed.
Columbia-Richland Fire Service firefighters were called to brush fires on Old Bluff Road and on Congaree Road on Monday, acting Chief Aubrey Jenkins said. Those fires were between 5 and 10 acres.
About 6 1/2 acres of woods burned off Old Bluff Road near Hopkins, damaging not just vegetation but a double-wide mobile home, a skidder and a truck. That fire also damaged several residential yards, the fire service said.
Firefighters were called about the fire around 12:08 p.m. and arrived at 12:15 p.m. The fire was under control around 3:30 p.m.
The cause of the fire was not immediately available. Damages are estimated at about $62,500.
