Today is the Navam Full Moon Poya Day. Religious observances arebeing held in temples throughout the country to mark the occasion.
This day is of special significance to the Buddhists as the Lord Buddha proclaimed for the first time a code of fundamental ethical precepts before a gathering of monks at the Veluwanarama. It was on such a religious day that two leading disciples of the Buddha, Sariputta and Maha Moggallana, entered the order and the Buddha announced that within three months his Parinibbana would be taking place.
The Navam Perahera of the Gangarama paraded the streets last night. President Rajapaksa placed the relics casket on the tusker before the commencement of the Perahera. Chief incumbent of the Gangarama temple, the Ven. Galaboda Gnanissara Thera also participated in the occasion.
ITN is airing its Poya day programme “Savanak Res” from the Sri Sudharmarama Raja Maha Vihare at Batagalla in Pujapitiya, Harispattuwa. Religious programmes are being telecast since early morning. Poya Day programmes of the Lakhanda Radio are also being broadcast from the premises of the Welle-Devala Vihara at Unawatuna in Galle.
