President Barack Obama has nominated an Oconee County family court judge to serve as a federal judge for South Carolina.
Family Court Judge Timothy Cain has served in that position since 2000. The 50-year-old Cain previously worked as a prosecutor, public defender and in private practice. He also has served as an acting justice on South Carolina's Supreme Court.
Cain graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1986.
Fellow Oconee County native U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham recommended Cain for the lifetime appointment. The two practiced law together in the 1990s.
The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments March 23 in a 2008 case in which Cain sentenced an indigent man to a year in prison for failing to pay child support.
