The Indian Coast Guard hierarchy says that the apprehension of Indian fishermen who entered Sri Lankan territorial waters was the most appropriate initiative that had been taken by the Sri Lankans.
112 Indian fishermen who been poaching in Sri Lankan waters were arrested by Sri Lankan fishermen. Thereafter they were handed over to the Police. The Police produced them in Courts. Commander of Coast Guard Region East Inspector General Sathya Prakash Sharma said the Sri Lanka Defence Sector had taken the most corrective initiative with regard to the Indian fishermen who had invaded the Sri Lankan waters. The Hindu newspaper citing him said that Sri Lanka as well as India had taken action to arrest fishermen who had strayed into their waters. It is thereafter that suitable measures could be taken to sort out the issue at state level. The Indian Coast Guard head had emphasized that Sri Lanka had taken the most suitable step by apprehending the fishermen without resorting to killing or torturing.
