Cultivate vegetables on office premises

Feb 18, 2011 10:05:50 AM - itnnews.lk

President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge has informed all relevant sectors to immediately launch vegetable production programmes within the premises of all offices.

The President Secretary said that the related programmes should be mooted as mentioned in the circular issued in October 2007 with regard to the National Cultivation Drive “Apri Wawamu Rata Nagamu.” Crops and cultivation methods should be selected based on space available in office premises. Heads of the relevant establishment have been called upon to seek the support of technical officers of the Agricultural Department and Provincial Agricultural Departments. The related circular has already been issued to Ministry Secretaries, Provincial Chief Secretaries, District Secretaries and Secretaries of Governors, heads of Departments, State Corporations and Statutory Boards and Divisional Secretries.

A request has been made to cultivate vegetables in school gardens. The purpose is to educate the school children and thereby induce parents to take to home garden cultivation. A request has also been made to undertake cultivation on home gardens of Public Officials as well as premises of official quarters. This is in operation in parallel to the programme mooted by the Economic Development Ministry of establishing one million Domestic Economic Units. Heavy damage was inflicted to cultivations due to the adverse weather conditions experienced recently. Vegetable cultivations were severely impacted.
