A 38-year-old Gaston man has died after his car collided head-on with a van on Fairview Road/U.S. 178 on Thursday night.
Identified by Lexington County coroner Harry Harmon as Alvin M. Kimble III, the driver and lone occupant of a Hyundai car was driving west on the highway at the Interstate 20 exit ramp around 6:28 p.m., S.C. Highway Patrol trooper Billy Elder said.
Kimble's car slid sideways into a Dodge van heading east on Fairview Road. The driver of the van, Jimmy Roberson, 69, of North, was taken to Palmetto Health Richland for treatment of his injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.
Excessive speed is believed to have been a factor in the wreck, which remains under investigation, Elder said.
Kimble was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from his car. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Elder said.
