The Appeals Court has today (18) ordered that the local government elections for the Moneragala, Akmeemana and Akuressa areas to be stopped after taking up writ applications presented by the governing UPFA and an independent group.
The UPFA had filed two writ applications against the rejection of its nomination lists in Moneragala and Akmeemana while an independent group had challenged the rejection of its list in Akuressa.
After considering the three petitions, the Appeal Court had ordered that the local government election to the three bodies be stopped until the hearings are concluded.
The local government elections are scheduled to be held on March 17.
The court has fixed the petitions to be taken on February 24.
