The UNP has accused the government of spending Rs. 454 million to prepare the bid for the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and that it would be waste in the event the country fails to qualify to host it.
UNP Colombo District parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has told the media that the government has made the million rupee payment to a public relations company.
He has said that the government had made such a payment at a time when the masses are burdened with a high cost of living.
He has also said that although it was necessary to produce 36 bank guarantees if a country needed to bid for the Commonwealth Games, the Sri Lankan government had only been able to produce 12 bank guarantees.
According to Karunanayake, if the country fails to qualify to host the Commonwealth Games in 2018, the Rs. 454 million spent on preparing the bid would be a complete waste.
