Minister Johnston Fernando has said that the attempts made by the opposition to derive narrow political mileage from the increasing prices caused by the world economic crisis, have been unsuccessful.
The Minister said that the prices of goods have to be indicated in all newspaper advertisements from the first of next month. He said that when the President handed over the portfolio, he requested him not to bow down before the traders. Their only aim is to protect the consumers. The Minister was confident that in five years time the cooperative sector would be developed to suit the modern era.
The Minister was speaking at the inauguration of the CWE storage facility following renovations. The building is located at the Railway Station premises in Kandy. He said that the Cooperative Movement is being promoted to a level from where it can compete with the private sector and control the prices.
