Several trade unions backed by the National Trade Union Center (NTUC) to to commence a massive protest campaign on Tuesday (22) against the rising cost of living and the wastage of public funds by the government.
The Workers Collective Against High Cost of Living (WCAHCL) backed by the NTUC has said that it would commence anti government protests at grass root level.
NTUC Convener and WCAHCL member, Samantha Koralearachchi told a press conference that the people were unable to bear the high cost of living.
He said that the price of essential commodities kept increasing while the salaries of the working masses have not been subject to a decent increase.
Koralearachchi said the cost of living index in January was 231.2 units and this was an increase of 14.8 units since last year.
He explained that the prices of essential items have increased by Rs.2,468 since the previous year and the government has only granted a salary increment of Rs.1,248.
The WCAHCL said that it would continue with its protest campaign until the government actively addressed the cost of living issue.
