Sri Lankan-born Nishan De Silva, Director, Information Management and Compliance, Microsoft, Legal and Corporate Affairs, USA was honoured at the recent LegalTech New York trade show with a 2010 LTN Innovation Award. The LTN Innovation Awards honour law firms and law departments.
The winners were selected by an independent jury of three LTN board members: Andy Adkins (Legal Technology Institute), Fredric Lederer (Center of Legal and Court Technology, William & Mary Law School), and David Whelan (Law Society of Upper Canada).
The judges chose Martin (“Marty”) Metz as the recipient of the IT Director of the Year. David Whelan writes in the February issue of Law Technology News: “A frequent speaker and mentor, Metz has provided vision and leadership that extends far beyond his immediate position. No matter where employed, he has been one of our industry’s great ambassadors for more than two decades.”
In an interview with Editor-in-Chief of LTN, Monica Bay, Nishan De Silva, winner of the LTN Award for Most Innovative Use of Technology in a Legal Department said, “Our goal at Microsoft was to embrace how we work with one another and we really wanted to make sure how we create that information; how we collaborate that information and how we ultimately retain that information.
So, we wanted to make sure we are using the right technology and what better technology to use than Sharepoint 20/10 as a solution where collaborating — working with one another and really enhancing – moving away from an email culture to a more centralised repository where we can store our information.”
Nishan de Silva from Sri Lanka, of Microsoft’s Law Department was among the winners. Others were Gonzalo de Cesare (IT Champion) and Ann Ostrander of Kirkland & Ellis (Law Firm). Nishan is the son of Ranjini de Silva and internationally-acclaimed, veteran journalist Rex De Silva, former editor-in chief of the Sun and Weekend newspapers, published by Independent Newspapers Limited.
