The Consumer Affairs Authority has decided to ban the use of plastic weighing scales.
The Authority has decided to ban the use of plastic weighing scales in shops and supermarkets as it gave an incorrect reading. Director of the Department K. Premasiri Kumara said that under a 1995 Act, plastic weighing scales is only meant for private use and not in the market. He said that the authorities have decided to strictly implement this law and anyone found to have violated it could face a fine of between 2500 and 3000 rupees. He further said that the Department has also begun to carry out raids on stores and shops which use such weighing scales.
