The Government has increased the import tax on potatoes.  The Agriculture Minister said that the President took this decision with the aim of protecting the local cultivator.

Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said that the President usually imposes a tax on imports when harvesting of the related product is in place in the country. The purpose is to safeguard the local cultivator. As such potatoes are now being harvested and the President has decided to impose a 20 rupee tax on the import of potatoes.
