Elections in 60 Local Bodies have been postponed. Petitions have been filed for these Local Councils.
The Elections Secretariat said it has been decided to postpone elections to 60 Local Councils for which petitions have been filed. A decision has not yet been taken as to when the polls for these Local Bodies will be held. These include the Maharagama, Kaduwala, Homagama and Kesbewa Local Councils in the Colombo District. Elections to 16 Local Bodies in the Jaffna Districts and three each in the Kilinochchi, Kandy, Galle, Trincomalee, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Districts have also been postponed, in addition to four each in the Puttalam and Ratnapura Districts. There are also eight local bodies in the Gampaha, Moneragala, Matale and Kegalle Districts. It has also been decided to postpone polls to three local Councils in the Matara, Nuwara Eliya and Kalutara Districts. The Elections Secretariat pointed out that polls to these Local Bodies will not be held under the verdicts to petitions which are being heard in Courts are issued. However, if a determination was given in respect of any Local Body before the 24th of this month, the Elections Secretariat said due consideration will be given to holding polls of these bodies on the scheduled date. Deputy Elections Chief Mahinda Deshapriya said that the Elections Commissioner has decided to suspend the marking of postal ballots in relation to the Local Bodies for which elections had been postponed.
