Fort Jackson recruit dies of pneumonia

A Fort Jackson soldier died in a Columbia hospital today due to complications caused by pneumonia. The 19-year-old, who was in his fifth week of basic training, was admitted to Fort Jackson's Moncrief Army Community Hospital February 12.
Two days later he was transported to Providence Hospital, then moved again to Palmetto Richland for a higher level of critical care. He remained in serious condition throughout the past week. The soldier's family was with him when he died early this morning.
The soldier's name, military unit and hometown will not be released until Monday to allow adequate next of kin notification.
