Prime Minster D.M. Jayaratne has said that social development programme launched in Sri Lanka has already achieved successful results.
The Prime Minister said that introduction of free education to the whole country from primary classes to the university level for the past 60 years has produced not only a highly literate society but opened vast avenues for the educated rural poor.
The Prime Minister expressed these views while addressing the conference of the Social Services Ministers in the South Asian Region. The conference got underway in Colombo yesterday. It will come to an end tomorrow. The policy manifesto of the Social Services Ministers of the South Asian region will be released tomorrow. The Social Services Ministers in Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan participate in the conference.
