The UNP has today (21) condemned the Elections Commissioner’s decision to postpone elections for 60 local government bodies.
The Elections Commissioner yesterday announced that elections for 60 local government bodies will not be held on March 17 until the legal cases filed by various political parties and independent groups are concluded.
UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya releasing a statement says that it is unacceptable that the Elections Commissioner had decided to postpone elections to 60 local government bodies even before a court directive has been issued on the matter.
He observes that the court has so far stopped elections only in three local government bodies.
He also notes that under the existing laws on the local government elections, the Elections Commissioner did not have the mandate to postpone elections in local government bodies that had cases before courts.
According to Jayasuriya, the candidates engaged in propaganda work for the elections have been faced with many difficulties due to the postponement.
