The UNP today (21) withdrew the writ application filed in the Appeal Court challenging the rejection of the nomination list for the Maharagama Urban Council.
The Elections Department has said that local government elections in the Maharagama Urban Council would be held on March 17 after the main opposition UNP withdrew its writ application challenging the rejection of its nomination paper for the respective body.
The Elections Department yesterday said that elections to 60 local government bodies where legal action has been filed by political parties will not be held on March 17.
The Maharagama Urban Council was also among the 60 local government bodies that were named by the Elections Department to be canceled on March 17.
UNP General Secretary had informed court today that the party was willing to withdraw the writ application if the Elections Commissioner was going to hold elections to the Maharagama Urban Council without postponing it.
Counsel representing the Elections Commissioner informed court that the Commissioner was prepared to hold elections for the Maharagama Urban Council on March 17 if the writ application was withdrawn.
