The Northern fishermen are engaged in a protest campaign against the harassment they face from their Indian counterparts. They staged a protest in Jaffna.
The protest organized by the Northern fishermen was staged opposite the Indian Consul General’s Office in Jaffna. The Northern fishermen said that their Indian counterparts were straying into Sri Lanka waters to fish threatening their only avenue of earning an income. At the same time they accused the Indian fishermen of destroying their fishing gear while on certain occasion they forcibly seized their fishing gear. Joining with their family members, the Northern fishermen demand the Indian Authorities to tke suitable action to prevent such activities. The fishermen staged the protest under the patronage of Rev. Fr. Ananda Kumar, of the Madagal Church in Jaffna. Fishermen in Point Pedro raising black flags in three wheelers expressed their protest. At the end of the agitation, the fishermen handed over a memorandum to the Indian Consul General’s Office.
