War heroes who shouldered the task of winning the terrorist war have now joined the cultivation war.
Members of the forces who are serving in the Jaffna Peninsula have joined in a massive cultivation drive and are meeting their vegetable and fruits requirements from the area itself. They had already planted various types of vegetables and fruits are area spanning about 80 acres in Palaly. Jaffna Commanding Officer Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe said the soldiers have taken to cultivation on their own. This has provided a fine opportunity of procuring fresh vegetables and fruits with high nutritious value for their benefit as well as the benefit of the people.
Major General Hathurusinghe said they have launched a home garden cultivation competition. Five families of each regimental area have been selected and they are given 10 perches for cultivation. They are also encouraged to cultivate crops they wish. In this manner, he said their intention was to make Jaffna self sufficient in fruits and vegetables.
