President Rajapaksa calls on the entire nation to join in accelerating the one million home garden cultivation programme.
A severe food crisis is already looming in the world. Even food prices have soared to considerable levels. After identifying this disastrous situation, the Government in time launched the “Api Wawamu Rata Nagamu” national cultivation drive to successfully face this crisis. With the introduction of the launch of this national cultivation drive at that time, the President, as the head of stage, set an example to the entire country. Vegetable cultivation has been launched at the Temple Trees as well as the President House premises. Addressing a public meeting at Ratnapura yesterday, the President invited the entire nation to join in this war.
The President referred to an era during which vegetables were imported. He emphasized that he did not believe that vegetables should be imported.. A Domestic Economic Unit was being planned in household with the aim of cultivating home gardens. It should also be possible to produce the milk that is required for the children. If this programme is successfully mooted, it would be possible to meet the requirements of the family. Vegetables are being cultivated in the premises of the Temple Trees and the President’s House instead of flowers. He added that there is some beauty in it than flowers.
