Lexington county fire fighters were put to the test Tuesday with a wind-driven wildfire that threatened homes in Sandy Run.
Shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday, Lexington fire officials were alerted to a fire on the 900 block of Calvary Church Road. When fire fighters arrived, they found a large wind driven fire rapidly spreading to surrounding properties, the fire department reported.
Even though it took more than an hour to bring the blaze under control, no one was injured and no homes were damaged, the fire department said.
The fire spread from a pile of household garbage being burned in a yard. The person responsible was cited and could be fined more than $1000, the Lexington County Fire Department said in a statement.
Even though the state forestry commission lifted its red flag alert on outdoor burning on Tuesday, residents were encouraged to limit outdoor burning.
