President Rajapaksa has given instructions to launch a separate unit to crackdown on malpractices in prisons.
The President gave these instructions during a meeting which reviewed progress of the Rehabilitation and Prisons Reform Ministry. The meeting was held at Temple Trees. The Government incurs an expenditure of about 10,000 rupees monthly on each prison inmate. This money could be saved by using them for the massive development process which is now in place in the country. The President advised the officials to advert on getting the inmates involved in agricultural and other development projects. Attention was drawn to establishing a separate centre for the detention of children under 16 years of age. He emphasized the need to expedite the work related to the relocation of the Bogambara Prisons in Pallekele. Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera and President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga were among those present at this discussion.
