National Park Service workers and students are out at Castle Pinckney in Charleston Harbor this week making laser scans and taking photographs of the 1809 brick fortification.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the work at the fort on a small island is a prelude to deciding the future of the abandoned fortification owned by the South Carolina State Ports Authority.
The fort is being studied as part of the National Park Service's Historic American Building Survey.
The photographs and architectural drawings made from the laser scans will be part of a report on the fort to be stored in the Library of Congress.
