Picture ID could be required to vote in SC

South Carolina voters will have to show photo identification at polls under a proposal that has advanced in the legislature.
State senators late Wednesday gave the bill a second reading, leaving one more vote before the measure moves back to the House.
Voters currently can show either a driver's license or voter registration card, which lacks a photo.
Senators amended the House bill and exempted people who are 65 years old and over from having to get IDs to vote. They also created an 11-day early voting period that will end three days before the election. Meanwhile, it leaves much of the existing absentee voting law intact.
The measure died last year with the House and Senate unable to agree on a compromise between their two versions.
