The Human Rights Commission is meeting for the first time today.
Retired Supreme Courts Judge Priyantha Perera will serve as the President. The Commission will meet at Barnes Place in Colombo. Retired Government Analyst Dr. M.A.J. Mendis, former IGP P.E. Anandarajah, Dr. Bernard Soysa and Mrs. Jezima Ismail are the other members of the Commission.
The Commission has been appointed on the powers bestowed on the President by Article 41 of the constitution. The 18th amendment to the constitution has strengthened the Human Rights Commission.
