Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has emphasized that the violation of the Maritime boundaries by fishermen was a humanitarian problem. He pointed out that the Government’s stand was to sort out the issue at the state level.
The Minister was making clarifications on this issue at the weekly Cabinet news briefing today. The Minister said that the President had personally discussed the issue with Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in New Delhi. He too was present at this meeting. The fishermen are unaware of the Maritime Boundary Limits. This is more effectively a humanitarian problem. When one problem is settled today another new problems crops up tomorrow. The Minister said that the External Affairs Ministries of the two countries are continuously talking as to how the issue could be sorted out
