Colleton County has rejected a request by South Carolina Electric and Gas to build a coal ash landfill in the county.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the county zoning board of appeals deadlocked 2-2 on the issue Thursday. A majority was needed so the utility could build the landfill.
SCE&G wanted a zoning exception to create a 15-story-tall landfill of coal ash residue near the village of Canadys. The board voted after a public hearing during which 30 people spoke against the landfill, saying it threatened their health and would ruin the rural area.
Last month, more than 100 people were shut out of a public meeting on the issue. Officials closed the doors to the courthouse after the meeting room filled. Those left outside complained they weren't being heard.
