Tsunami Child Found Employed In A Garage

A 13 year old child, who claims to be orphaned by the December 2004 tsunami, was found to be employed in a car repair shop in Homagama, Chairperson, National Child Protection Authority, Anoma Dissanayake said.
The child, according to Dissanayake, was taken into custody by a lady who then sent him to work in a garage.
“We found him because he had met with an accident and was admitted to the National Eye Hospital,” she said. “He suffered an injury to his eye while at the garage.”
According to Dissanayake however, while the child claims to be orphaned, a lady had come to the hospital claiming to be his mother. “I have instructed the police to conduct a DNA test just to be on the safe side,” she said. “The results are still pending.”
Dissanayake also said that the child had not been sent to school for the last six years and that the owners of the garage had been let out on bail on Thursday (24) by the Magistrate Court.
When The Sunday Leader attempted to meet the child at the hospital, Director Dr. Sisira Liyanage declined to give permission.
