More than 900 S.C. workers -- whose jobs were in jeopardy for nearly two years -- are breathing a sigh of relief.
The federal government Friday awarded a $23.5 million contract for Tricare, the government-backed military health insurance program, that could keep workers at BlueCross Blue Shield of South Carolina subsidiary PGBA in their jobs for nearly six years, PGBA spokesman Billy Quarles said.
PGBA is a contractor for Humana Military Health Care Services of Louisville, Ky., which was awarded the contract by the Department of Defense. More than 200 PGBA workers in Columbia and Camden and 700 in Florence provide claims processing, customer service, fiscal services and information systems support for 3 million Tricare beneficiaries in 10 Southern states, Quarles said.
Administering government health-care programs is a key business for BlueCross, and the company has been involved with the militarys plan for 30 years.
