University of South Carolina transportation specialist Derrick Huggins starts a temporary assignment Tuesday as an adviser for improving bus service in the Columbia area.
Attending his first board meeting this afternoon of the Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority, Huggins told members he is looking at several steps that will “put some new product out there” but said he isn’t ready with recommendations yet.
He is on loan as the RTA ponders changes in bus operations, amid efforts to build more support for a permanent funding source, including blending USC student shuttles into area bus service.
“We have not determined all his roles, all his responsibilities,” said Richland County councilwoman Joyce Dickerson, who chairs the RTA. “We are working through that.”
Plans call for Huggins to serve the RTA for 90 days.
