It is the present Government that has strengthened the Local Government Institutions for the development of the village. President Rajapaksa expressed this view when he launched a series of seminars entitled ‘Sapiri Gamak -Supiri Ratak’ from Anuradhapura.
The President said that the village is represented by the Pradeshiya Sabha. Earlier the Pradeshiya Sabha had no powers to build or develop roads. He said the Pradeshiya Sabhas were strengthened and at certain times funds allocated to Pradehiysa Sabhas exceeded those of the Parliamentarians. Roads were constructed under the Gama Neguma. Some were concreted and bridges built in villages. The difference can be noticed when one visits a village. The Government will launch a programme to provide electricity to every home. The President opined that none of the houses in Anuradhapura will be left without electricity.
The seminar organized to ensure the victory of the UPFA in the Local Government Elections was held at the Salgado Stadium in Anuradhapura. A large number of people thronged the stadium. Addressing them the President further said that the benefits of massive development have been brought to the ‘Rajarata’ area as well. He added that the Government is prepared to rebuild the Rajarata area which suffered extensive damage due to the rains.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Ministers, Parliamentarians, Provincial and Pradeshiya Sabha Members also participated in the occasion.
