They didn't calculate a library fine, but it would have been substantial after a man who returned a book to a South Carolina elementary school exactly 39 years after it was due.
The Beaufort Gazette reports 54-year-old Jeff Rhoads Sr. of Burton returned the book to Shell Point Elementary School last week.
Rhoads says he's not sure how he came by the book about snakes. He hates snakes and never attended Shell Point. But he remembers he loved the book and read it to children in his neighborhood growing up. But he says he always felt guilty about it, too.
Rhoads rediscovered the book while spring cleaning and returned it.
Library assistant Jennifer Slade says returning the book shows students it's never too late to return something to its owner.
