The first woman to serve on South Carolina's Supreme Court is the first winner of a civics award named for the first woman on the nation's highest court.
The National Center for State Courts says South Carolina Chief Justice Jean Toal has received the Sandra Day O'Connor Award for the Advancement of Civics Education.
The award honors an organization, court, or person who has promoted or inspired an innovation in civics education. Officials commended Toal's work on several programs that bring South Carolina school children to the state Supreme Court to hear oral arguments.
O'Connor will present the award to Toal later.
