The book "Push," on which the 2009 movie "Precious" was based, has been pulled from the shelves of Horry County schools.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that a local resident told the school board Monday that some books on the middle school reading lists are inappropriate and cited "Push" as an example.
The book contains extreme language and sexual content in telling the story of a 16-year-old girl abused by her parents.
District spokeswoman Teal Britton said the book was available for about a week, but copies were removed Feb. 18 from middle schools and three high schools.
Britton said the district would never knowingly have selected the book. She said it came from a vendor told to select books on diversity and was sent to classroom libraries without the district's knowledge.
