Judge wants hundreds of SC shelter cats seized

Mar 1, 2011 1:35:00 PM - thestate.com
A judge has ordered hundreds of cats living in cages at a South Carolina shelter to be seized and placed in emergency care.

Horry County Magistrate Bradley Mayers ordered Tuesday that county officials seize the animals that had been living at the Sacred Vision Animal Sanctuary in Myrtle Beach and move them to a temporary shelter.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals last week called on county officials to take the 300 cats, saying an undercover volunteer documented filthy conditions and animal ailments. PETA accused the shelter manager of abusing the cats and said authorities had turned a blind eye to the issue.

Elizabeth Owen was charged with improper care and treatment of animals in September. Her attorney says PETA's abuse allegations have no merit.
