The health authorities have cautioned the public on the possibility of the spread of leptospirosis widely known as ‘rat fever’, with the flood waters receding in many areas.
The most number of cases have been reported from Galgamuwa in the Kurunegla District. Last month alone 393 had entered the Kurunegala hospital for treatment. Action has been initiated to provide them the required emergency treatment and drugs. 15 have already died. The North Western Health Ministry has launched a programme to appraise the public about the control of the disease.
