The Government had no need to postpone elections. Minister Susil Premajayantha said that it was the UNP which created a distorted situation expressing controversial views with regard to the polls.
The Minister said the Government had no intention of postponing the polls of Local Bodies where nominations were rejected. If so they too could have filed petitions against nominations filed by the UNP for local councils, saying there were technical and other errors. It was only the UNP which filed petitions against nominations accepted by the Elections Commissioner. This explicitly indicates that there was need for the Government to postpone polls. The Opposition which filed petitions for certain local bodies had later withdrawn them. If they were to withdraw these petitions, the Minister queries as to why they filed petitions in the Court.
