There is an attempt to put the Sri Lankan cricket heroes into difficulty distorting the contents of the “Vimasuma” Programme telecast by the Independent Television Network.
Several electronic media institutions and some websites had been engaged in this foolish attempt drawing attention to the “Vimusama” feature telecast over ITN at the end of the news bulletin last Sunday. The script based on the Sri Lanka-Pakistan Cricket World Cup encounter was penned by veteran journalist Mahinda Abeysundera. It was emphasized that the match was a nail biting encounter and the cricket fans were with their national team until the end of the encounter, while the defeat suffered was a good lesson for their next victory. But certain groups were engaged in an untiring effort to put the great cricketers Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera into difficulty by interpreting certain sentences which were included in this particular programme.
ITN neither had an idea nor need to do so. It was ITN which was with Sri Lanka Cricket sans parochial aims, from the time Sri Lanka made a request to host the World Cup and until the construction of the new stadiums and also when the Sri Lanka team was gearing up on behalf of the World Cup targets. ITN as the Channel of the motherland will continue to remain with the cricketing heroes. It should be mentioned that the cricketers would be discouraged as a result of the distorted propaganda carried out by certain interested parties. ITN wishes to request all groups not to leave room for such a situation to develop. ITN also wishes to underline that as in the past it always remains with the cricketing heroes at present. Its prime anticipation is to see that the Sri Lankan cricketers win the World Cup and do proud to their country.
