The government is to launch an accelerated national food production programme on March 12.
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa has told the media that the programme called Divi Neguma is to be launched at a cost of Rs. 10 billion with the participation of one million families.
Rajapaksa has said that each family will be paid Rs. 10,000 to purchase vegetable seeds, fertilizer and and other necessary items for their home gardens.
The government hopes that families would be able to produce about 300 kilos of vegetables, fruits and green leaves.
The national food cultivation programme is expected to produce additional food production worth Rs. 15 billion this year.
A team of government officials comprising of Grama Niladaris, Samurdhi Officers and Agriculture officers are to visit each and every house in the next few days to select families for the one million home garden programme.
