President Rajapaksa has called upon the people to cultivate their home gardens and be proud partners of the National Economy.
The President said that although earlier the houses were wattle and daub and the people cultivated the gardens. The newly constructed houses are beautiful but nothing is cultivated in the gardens as people are used to buying everything from outside. He said that this system has to be changed. Every tree planted strengthens the domestic economy. An interest in farming should be inculcated in children for them to feel independent. The premises of the President’s House is also cultivated at present. The Parliamentarians and Ministers are also cultivating. He requested the people to start cultivating their home gardens and join in establishing the economic units.
The National Farmers Conference was held at the Temple Trees under the patronage of President Rajapaksa. The President handed over gardening kits to the farmers symbolizing the national programme for the cultivation of one million home gardens. The coconut subsidy programme was also launched in parallel to the home garden cultivation programme. Ministers, Parliamentarians, Government Officials and more than 7000 members of the farming community from all Provinces were present.
