Some Northeast Richland homeowners got a dreadful call Thursday: Their home burned to the ground while they were out of town in New York.
The house at 240 Dove Park Road caught fire sometime before 9:55 a.m., the time someone called the Columbia-Richland Fire Service, interim chief Aubrey Jenkins said.
Firefighters had the fire under control in about 30 minutes, but the house was a total loss. The heat was intense enough to damage siding on the neighboring homes, Jenkins said.
The monetary loss is estimated to be about $140,000, he said.
The Richland County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fire, and no cause or point of origin has been determined yet.
