The Power and Energy Ministry is to provide electricity to all parts of the North and East Provinces in the country to help the rebuilding of the areas following the end of a three decade long war.
Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka has asked the ministry to allocate Rs. 450 million to provide electricity to the people in the Eastern Province who have not yet being supplied with power.
Ranawaka has asked that Rs. 10 million from the Rs. 50 million national allocation for the electrification programme be allocated to the East and to allocate Rs. 400 million from China’s Exim Bank under the Chinese loan facility, also to provide electricity to the East.
The Ministry is aiming at increasing the 87% level of electrification in the country to 100% by 2012.
