Mar 6, 2011 7:39:14 AM - itnnews.lk

Houses are being constructed for slum dwellers not for the beautification of the Colombo City, but to provide them comfort.

Expressing views in a TV programme, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said that as a Government their obligation was to provide better homes with all comfort to families living in shanties. Those who live in such habitats make a valuable to contribution to the City. These families will not be pushed to outstations. But the Defence Secretary noted that their intention was not only to make the City beautiful, but also to provide better living conditions to these families enabling them to lead a happy life.

President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge said “Gama Neguma” is spread throughout the Mahinda Chinthana. He said the one million Domestic Economic Units would be coming up in villages and not in urban areas. 77 percent of the population lives in rural areas. By strengthening the one million Economic Units, it is possible to find solutions to the food crisis that it much talked about and also any problems related to the economy. Mr. Weeratunge in this process the Pradeshiya Sabhas had to a play a significant role. He emphasized that the Government is clearly working towards strengthening these bodies.
