A Lexington County couple who were accused of locking their 3-year-old
in a dog pen to play have been released from jail.
Edward George Smith, 34, and Kelly Lynn Smith, 37, each were arrested
Thursday on a charge of unlawful conduct toward a child, according to a
warrant from the Lexington County Sheriff's Department. Each was
released on a $5,000 bond, according to a jail report.
The two were arrested after someone found their son - wearing a dirty
diaper - wandering alone in the middle of Pond Branch Road. Sheriff's
deputies determined where the child lived and when they knocked on the
door no one answered. Deputies entered the house and found the Smiths
A 2-year-old child was asleep in a crib saturated with urine and he also
was wearing a dirty diaper. Deputies reported that the house smelled of
rotting food and spoiled linens. They also said garbage, moldy food and
dirty clothes were strewn about the house.
Edward Smith told deputies the couple sometimes locked the 3-year-old in
a dog pen to play so they would not have to keep an eye on him. The
children were removed from the home, the sheriff's department reported.
