Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has pointed out that many foreign diplomats have recognized the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) is an independent commission. The Minister made this reference participating in a news conference to brief the media on the 16th sessions of the UN Human Rights Commission.
The Minister said that during his visit to Geneva last week, he was able to meet more than 50 diplomats. Of them a majority understood that the LLRC appointed by the President had begun to discharge a significant amount of work. The Minister said that he told them to wait until the final report was released. The Government wanted to prevent an organization such as the LTTE resurfacing. Minister Samarasinghe emphasized at the media briefing the intention of this commission is to study the lessons of the past and see that programmes are being launched to prevent a recurrence of such a situation.
