The National function marking International Women’s Day was organised at the BMICH this morning. The theme of the function was “Her knowledge and strength for building the nation”. Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne was the chief guest.
The Prime Minister said that women are today afforded opportunities to come forward in every sphere. Women are serving in all sectors from top to bottom. He pointed out that women not only enjoy equal opportunities but have advanced more than men.
12 women who had won international awards and displayed special skills were feted. Ministers Basil Rajapaksa, Tissa Karaliyadda and Sumedha Jayasena, Deputy Ministers A.L.M. Hisbullah and Nirupama Rajapaksa and Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody were present.
In the meantime ITN’s Women’s Programme Unit organized the “Liya Waruna” programme marking International Women’s Day today. It was organized at the National Youth Centre in Maharagama. The National Youth Services Council also extended support. Among the highlights were presentation of kits worth 5000 rupees on behalf of expectant mothers and the conduct of medical clinics and beauty therapy programmes. Vice Canceller of the Colombo University Shanika Hirimburegama, Dr. Pandith Amaradeva and ITN General Manager Aruna Wijesinghe were among those present.
