A 20-year-old who escaped last week while in custody of the Richland County Sheriff's Department has been apprehended in Lexington County.
Stephon Pringle, 20, was captured in Lexington by the sheriff's department's fugitive task force and agents from the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division, said Capt. Chris Cowan, a sheriff's department spokesman.
Deputies had been searching for Pringle since March 2 after someone opened a police car door so he could escape after an arrest. He was one of four people who were arrested after police found them allegedly smoking marijuana behind a building at an apartment complex off of Hunt Club Road.
Pringle was handcuffed at the time of his escape but was not wearing them when apprehended on Tuesdsay, Cowan said. Police now are searching for information on who let Pringle out of the sheriff's cruiser and who removed his handcuffs.
Pringle is in jail at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, Cowan said.
