The President’s Secretary reminisced that schools were kept open until 3.00 p.m. and even until 3.45 p.m. in the past. He clarified the Government’s stand on this issue. This will apply to the 1000 schools to be modernized. These schools may function until 3.00 p.m. based on the consensus reached with the parents, children and also with other stakeholders. Other than that, he emphatically stated that keeping the schools open until 3.00 p.m. had not been made mandatory and it is also the vision of the President. He again clarified that only if there is a consensus, the school can function until 3.00 p.m. Mr. Weeratunge said that he considered this clarification was important at a time when rumours were being spread on this issue.
